Dogs Recruiting Guidelines

We are sharing information about what each college level is looking for in regards to each football position - Power 4, FBS, FCS, D2, NAIA, D3 and Juco. Check out the slide show below and also download the PDF files from the links below that for additional recruiting information about offensive positions and defensive positions.

  • Who Plays a role in Recruiting?

    College/Universities – Want the biggest, fastest, strongest & brightest athletes they can find to help them win and represent the institution in a positive light.

    High school prospects – Take care of your academics. Seek out realistic opportunities to play at the next level given your ability and skill set. BE HONEST with who you are.

  • Who Plays a role in Recruiting (continued)?

    Prospect Parents – Educate yourself on the process. Have realistic and attainable expectations. Help facilitate opportunities to visit schools and summer camps. Do not let the process become stressful.

    High School Coaches – Provide an atmosphere conducive to the success and advancement of your players. Promote the athletes to college and universities and foster those relationships.

  • Types of College Programs

    Division 1 - Full scholarships, Partial scholarships

    Division 2 - Partial scholarships, PWO’s, Walk-ons

    Division 3 – PWO’s, Walk-ons

    NAIA – Independent Association outside the NCAA

    Junior College (2 year)

  • Division 1 FBS (Power 4, G5)

    105 scholarships per

    • OU, OSU, Kansas, Texas Tech, UNT, etc.

    • Graduate and complete 16 core classes

    • 7/10 must be English, Math or Science

    • Core GPA of 2.3 or better

    • 4 years English, 3 years Math, 2 Year natural/physical Science

    • 1 extra year of English, Math or Science

    • 2 years Social Science

    • 4 years of extra Core classes

  • Division 1 FCS (Central Arkansas, NDSU, Abilene Christian, etc.)

    63 scholarships per

    • Patriot/Ivy/Pioneer League Schools give academic money

    • Can split scholarships in partial pages or have none

  • Division 2 (UCO, SWOSU, NSU, OBU, ECU, etc.)

    36 scholarships per

    • Size and Speed still important

    • Some schools are private and grades are more important

    • Can split scholarships in partial packages

  • Division 3 and NAIA

    Division 3 - 0 Scholarships

    • IVY, Knox, COE, Carleton

    • Grades VERY important – Merit based money

    • Most are private – Academic money, grants, loans

    NAIA - 24 Scholarships

    • Bethel, SW Kansas, Langston

    • Not governed by NCAA

    • Athletic money, Grants, needs based money and loans

  • How can you best position yourself?

    • Know what you want in a college

    • Organization and planning

    • Effective highlight film

    • Effective communication

    • Accurate information

  • Tips for Hudl Highlights

    • 5 minutes in length

    • All contact info, grad year and measurables on first slide

    • Best most explosive plays first

    • After your film is created, please contact position coach to ensure it is ready

    • Screen Record the highlight, so recruiters don’t have to wait for the HUDL commercials to play first

  • "The Right Fit"

    Create a list of 20 schools that fit YOUR criteria. Consider these factors:

    • Distance from home

    • Academic standards

    • Size

    • Cost

    • Competitive level of program

    • Scholarship opportunity

  • Recruiting Terms and Timelines

    • Contact Period – Most Wide open. Coaches can visit prospects and families. Limited to once per week. Electronic and written are also permitted.

    • Evaluation Period – No home visits. Coaches can still visit schools. Purpose of the visit is for EVAL. Prospects can visit schools and receive electronic communication. Many scholarship offers go out in this period.

  • Recruiting Terms and Timelines (continued)

    • Quiet Period – No off campus contact or viewing. Visits to colleges and electronic communication is permitted. Coaches often try to have prospects visit campus unofficially during this time in the spring and early summer

    • Dead Period – No in person contact is allowed. Electronic communication is still permitted.

  • Recruiting Terms (continued)

    Official Visit Visit to campus by athlete and parents paid for by the college. College may pay transportation to and from, Room and meals (3 per day), and reasonable entertainment expenses.

    Unofficial Visit Any visit to campus where the family incurs the cost. Only expense the college can pay for is admission to home athletic games. No limit of visits

  • Recruiting Timeline

    Recruitment for most (not all) D1 athletes begins Soph year. No contact does not mean no chance of scholarship. Following info is for D1 ONLY. Smaller schools begin Junior and Senior year.

    Freshmen/Sophomore Year – Division 1

    • Calls – you may contact coaches

    • Off Campus – NONE

    • Official visits – NONE

    • Unofficial visit - unlimited

  • Recruiting Timeline (continued)

    Junior Year – Division 1

    • Calls – you may contact coaches

    • Coaches can contact you in May of this year

    • Off Campus visit – NONE

    • Official Visit – Can Begin April 1st and Last through specified date in June

    • Unofficial visit - unlimited

    Senior Year – Division 1

    • Calls – you may contact coaches

    • Off Campus contact - Allowed

    • Off Campus visit – Allowed Spring/summer/winter/fall

    • Official Visit – Can Begin April 1st and Last through specified date in June

    • Unofficial visit – unlimited

    • Evaluations and Contact – up to 6 times Senior year

  • One Day Camps

    Attend camps at schools you and your coaches think you have an opportunity to play for.

    • 9th / 10th choose dream schools but do not ignore smaller schools at camps

    • 11th/12th begin to choose schools who are communicating with you

    • College coaches like to see athletes in person as well as develop relationships with the athlete and family.

  • Winter Combines

    These are combines hosted by recruiting services including On3 or Rivals. They can also be hosted by apparel companies like Nike, Adidas or UA

    • Get with coaches to understand these combines

    • Prospects can have a good or bad combine, and those results can help or hinder the athlete

    • Some combines are money grabs and don’t provide any value to the athlete. (visit with coaches about this)

  • Recruiting Services

    If you want something done right do it yourself with a coach’s assistance.

    • Don’t fall victim hearing what you want to HEAR. Listen to what you NEED to hear. Most are MONEY grabs!

    • Less than 3% of athletes realize a Scholarship. Less than 1% to D1

    • These services can provide value, but they are still going to require you to do all the work

    • Colleges DO NOT use the services that the parents pay for

    Junior Year

    • GRADES!!!!

    • Lift, Train, Speed, Agility

    • Contact schools you are interested in that are realistic opportunity to play att. Inquire about Junior days and unofficial visits.

    • Create 1 page resume. Send film/transcripts/test scores to schools at all Pick 2-3 one day camps you want to attend where coaches have invited you to. Maximize exposure

    • Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center

  • What's YOUR plan? (Senior edition)

    Senior Year

    • If you have D1 offers you will be taking official visits to make your final decision. Finalize eligibility center and academic requirements.

    • Not offered by Power 4 (B10, Big12, SEC, ACC) probably not likely unless prior communication with a coach.

    • Mid level D1 FBS and FCS will continue to evaluate and offer Apr-Dec.

    • D2/D3/NAIA will get started Nov/Dec so when D1 commits sign they can assess and add to their program. Visits start in January and run through March.

  • Parents' Role

    • Be Supportive. Every child’s recruitment is UNIQUE and EXCITING!

    • This is your son’s decision with you there to help guide

    • Help find the right fit from an athletic and academic standpoint

    • When visiting a school coaches are evaluating your child and you as well. They want to know everything about your son that they are investing in. How do they fit into their culture and program. Be genuine in your conversations.

    • Educate yourself on the schools and coaches you will visit.

    • Monitor your child’s grades

  • NCAA/NAIA Information

    1. Must be academically eligible

    2. Amateur status intact

    Why do we need these 2 things?

    • Official visits (D1 or D2) cannot begin until Aug 1st Junior year

    • Sign NLI/Scholarship agreement (early as NOV senior year)

  • NCAA/NAIA Registration

    NCAA D3 or Undecided

    • Can register as a Freshmen and not pay until later(unpaid profile page)

    • You receive your 10 digit, NCAA eligibility ID number

    NCAA D1 or D2

    • $90 fee, must be paid in order to be considered at this level
